Drilling

TECHNOLOGY

Installing and positioning the freeze pipes accurately in the ground is of utmost importance for any successful ground freezing project. There will be no cohesive frost body created if the neighbouring drill holes diverge away from each other too much.
Measuring the drill holes while drilling (gyro compass) or rechecking the freeze pipe drilling (inclinometer) are methods which allow for an accurate assessment of the distances between freeze pipes.
Various drilling methods and drilling tools are used, depending on the configuration and length of the freeze pipes as well as local ground conditions. The diameters of the freeze pipes vary from 2” (nitrogen freezing) to a maximum of 4” (brine freezing).
